All Good Things Must End – By Order of the Police
Many good things have come from people relaxing at a bar over alcohol and tobacco. The American Revolution, great works of literature, new pick-up lines, etc. But, it’s a fact of life that for every person who enjoys something there’s five more people who want to ban it. And the more people enjoy something, the more other people want to ban it. This is why I’m actually considering taking up smoking. It must be the most god damn enjoyable thing in the world for people to spend so much time and money trying to ban it.
For instance, Washington State activists could have spent thousands of hours and hundreds of thousands of dollars helping the homeless and feeding the hungry. Instead they chose to spend that time and money qualifying an initiative for the November ballot that would ban smoking in bars, restaurants, taverns and bowling alleys. Of course, there’s nothing really in it for them to help the homeless and hungry, except a warm feeling. That can’t compare to knowing they just made everyone else in the state re-arrange their lives to suit their preferences. Sure they could have avoided bars and restaurants that allowed smoking and frequented smoke-free establishments instead; but, how would they sleep at night knowing they couldn’t go anywhere they wanted without having to put up with smoke? And that selfish instinct, combined with the fascist’s impulse, trumps helping the homeless and hungry any day.
