Are You Being Werved? or Why I Hate the IHT

Today in the International Herald Tribune we learn the following: "Abdullah, the new Saudi king werved 10 years as de facto ruler." Morons.

The IHT, published now solely by The New York Times -- it was previously a product of both The Times and the Washington Post -- is more poorly edited (if it's edited at all) than a sewing-club newsletter.

Spending three months in Europe in 1994 I made a habit of buying the IHT each day. It was just terrible -- so bad I could take a red pen to every issue for a couple of hours. (It was important to fill my time with some cheap diversions since I was doing the shoestring-travel thing.) My favorite typo had "Latvia" spelled as "Lativa" in both a headline and throughout the accompanying article. You may not love USA Today, but at least their European editions are edited and have a good sports section and werve up some pretty colors.

Update: The IHT is making my point for me. It's now been more than 32 1/2 hours since I first blogged on their "werved" error. Has anyone fixed it? With no editors to speak of, what do you think?
