Arafat's Mysterious Death: Quincy, CSI or Cold Case?

In life, he was an evil, money-hoarding, power-hungry, little coward, the spelling of whose name we never could quite settle on. Is it Yasir or Yasser?

His death in November 2004 brought with it a mystery. What (or whom) caused Mr. Y. Arafat, who went by the nom de guerre of Abu Amar (also Abu Ammar), to die?

Well, we now have an answer. Dozens, really. Here's a sampling of the headlines:

  • Cause of Arafat death 'unknown'

  • Arafat died of AIDS, poisoning or an infection

  • Records: Stroke killed Arafat

  • Mystery infection, not Aids killed Yasser Arafat

  • Israel: Poisoning or AIDS may lead to Arafat death

  • Arafat's final illness a mystery, reports say

  • Medical records deepen Arafat death mystery-NY Times

  • Medical Records Say Arafat Died From a Stroke

  • Arafat's physician: French found AIDS in blood; cover-up alleged...

  • Well, I'm glad that's solved. Naturally, since this is the Middle East and nothing is unattached from charges of broader conspiracy, all this how-did-he-die theorizing occured on the same day Arafat's cousin was dragged into the street by 100 men and killed for acting like, well, Arafat.
