Let's Not Talk About Sex, Baby
Combing through the university news wires, I came across this article about a GW professor recently "fired", "let go", or "whose contract was not renewed"...whatever you want to call it, he won't be teaching his popular human sexuality course anymore. Apparently a few of the female college students taking the course were unprepared for what the course covered. Some of them complained that they were offended and uncomfortable by the course material. Maybe the title was not clear?
From what I read about the course, it sounds like it was a much better (as in more honest) version of sex education than what I heard in junior high school gym and science classes. Granted we were awkward 13 year olds at the time and these GW students are over 18 presumably. I was a little surprised, yet intrigued, at the idea of the GW professor showing the class a video of a man and a woman masturbating to climax. Great to see academic freedom in action! I can see how some people might feel a little shy about it. However, I do think it is worthwhile and important that academia challenges and pushes our boundaries from time to time - especially among adults. This, I think, is from where real education comes (no pun intended here).
