For One the Party Goes On in Singapore After the Nguyen Execution

Cutie Singaporean blogger Izzy migrated from her Sarong Party Girl site yesterday and set up shop at MissIzzy.com. Since (besides the occasional Belle Waring) she's the only Singapore-based blogger I have any experience reading I checked to see if she might offer some helpful perspective on the horrid execution yesterday of Van Tuong Nguyen. Instead of thoughtful comments I got this crap:
While I personally feel pained when I know [the death penalty] is being administered on someone that probably does not deserve to die, I believe it is for the better that the country is harsh and intolerant when it comes to things like that. I don’t know if people in Europe or the US realize it, but we are surrounded by developing countries, and lots them too. Somehow, we’ve managed to keep a third world flavour from seeping in and onto our streets, but if we dropped out guard and behaved like we would tolerate drugs in the country, drugs will come into the country.

There’s nothing wrong with an occasional line of coke, and really, taking E sporadically will not kill you, but why sacrifice our youth for the sake of human rights. I don’t like the fact that I can’t take drugs, but then again, I don’t like the fact that I can’t eat Coffee Bean’s Merry Berry Cheesecake all damn day and not get fat either. I could have the latter if I wanted to, but I don’t because I know it’s not good for me. How about the people that don’t? If I could have it my way, I’d have MacDonald’s and Cigarettes banned from the country too. You can’t of course, because they contribute to the flavour of the country, just as drugs contribute to the flavour of cities like London and New York and such and such, and in positive ways too. One thing is for sure, they can make a place harsher to live in, and the people that don’t fall into it become more resilient, among other things.

But you don’t have to have drugs to be creative. I know that for sure. You don’t have to have it to feel the need to be resilient, and you don’t need it to have fun. They’re always disappointing anyway, and the people that become addicts are made out of the same breed that were going to do nothing with their lives anyway, and the people that are made stronger and more creative in a drug environment would have gotten there regardless. I’ve seen it fuck people up, and it would have been worse if they weren’t so expensive in Singapore.

I say the life of one person is worth the pain of several hundred. You’d think it would be possible to exercise discretion with every individual caught, and it should be – especially if we had a jury system, which we do not for reasons I find both practical and yet unfair. But we are in South East Asia, there will be lots of desperate smuggling cases and we will have to feel sorry for all of them, and there will be more people being exploited, more pack horses… look. It’s shitty that we have the death penalty, but it is better that way.

You can’t control drugs like you can control prostitutes. Hookers are expensive and there are only so many visits to Orchard Towers your self-worth can take. There are no physical side-effects that would make you need to fuck more in order to get rid of the pain, and how far their trade reaches out into society can be controlled. The same can’t be said for drugs.

I don’t believe in the sacrificing of one life for the lives of many, because in most cases, you can’t be sure really how much more good it would do, by sacrificing that one life (think Iraqi civilians). It is not the sacrificing of one life that solves the problem. It is not Christ on the cross that has saved humanity. He may have saved Christians, God only knows (literally), but the basic Christian philosophy is the thing that has had a positive effect on society. It is the social and moral implication that makes all the difference.

I believe in scaring the shit out of people so that they don’t even presume they can solve their problems by making money out of causing other people problems. Lots of people are desperate, but by selling drugs and solving your own problems temporarily will not help anyone in the long run. Not you or your family, or anyone.

When you’re desperate of course, you can’t see that. I feel sad that a life has to go like that, who the fuck do we think we are? God? But when people can’t see the wider social implications, than it’s necessary to tell them, clearly, right from wrong.
And this shit is from a casual-sex/prostitution advocate. Stupid my-vice-is-better-than-your-vice bitch. I'm done with you. Party's over.
