Like other Texans charged with a felony, indicted Rep. Tom DeLay (R-Texas) has been relieved of his license to pack heat. A judge in Fort Bend County upheld the Texas Department of Public Safety's decision earlier this year to suspend DeLay's license to carry a concealed handgun.Of course, people who are merely accused of a crime should not have their rights taken away. They're innocent until proven guilty. Delay, like any Texan charged with a felony, should get his gun back.
...A spokeswoman for the Texas Department of Public Safety, Tela Mange, told [Heard on the Hill] that Texas law "is very clear, no matter who you are. ... We would suspend or revoke a handgun license of someone who has been accused of a crime." If DeLay is found not guilty of the money laundering charges against him or if his case is dismissed, then his license would be reinstated, Mange said.
