Ron Bailey's Role Model Succumbs

Adwaita, a tortoise alleged to have been born twenty years before the American Revolution, has died. (If estimates are correct he was born the same year as this guy!)

The tortoise, whose home for the last 130 years was the Alipore Zoo in Calcutta, India, was once owned by British baron/general Robert Clive, known for cementing England's foothold in the Indian sub-continent.

Curiously, the BBC claims Clive "became an opium addict and committed suicide," while Wikipedia makes no mention of the former in a lengthy bio of Clive.
