Nation's Top Cop: I'll Break Any Law I Want

Attorney General Alberto Gonzales testified in front of Congress today.
Under questioning by California Democrat Adam B. Schiff at a committee oversight hearing on the Justice Department, Gonzales signaled that the administration would not limit itself to warrantless electronic surveillance of international communications between the United States and abroad, as the National Security Agency has been doing since October 2001.

Schiff asked Gonzales whether the administration’s legal rationale for its NSA surveillance program would permit warrantless surveillance of purely domestic communications between American citizens.

“I’m not going to rule it out,” Gonzales said.

As he has done in prior congressional appearances since the NSA surveillance program came to light, Gonzales did not deny that the administration might be conducting other, still secret counter-terrorism programs.
