The Coming Backlash against the Anti-Smoking Fascists
Michael Siegel, a researcher whose anti-tobacco activism is partially responsible for the strength of the anti-smoking movement, has a great blog post from last week on how extreme the movement has become. Not just with their agenda - wanting to ban smoking in homes and throw people who smoke in front of others in jail - but with their laughable-on-its-face science, such as studies suggesting that 30 minutes of secondhand smoke exposure increases your risk of heart disease to the level of active smoking. Siegal describes in eerie detail the steps the anti-smoking movement is taking to bring about tobacco prohibition and his concern for a "good cause" gone bad.
I think - and maybe I'm just being optimistic here - that the anti-smoking fascists are shooting themselves in the foot. The American people turned against Big Tobacco once they realized the industry was lying to them. They might turn against the anti-smoking movement once they realize that they're telling even bigger lies. While the health fascists will always be able to capitalize on people's dislike of smoke, we have an opportunity here to unmask them for what they are: lying, fascist sons-of-bitches who want to take away people's freedom.
