Democracy is Already a Lottery
Arizona voters will vote on a ballot initiative that would give $1 million to one lucky voter each election to improve voter turn-out. Supporters claim the ballot box lottery won't cost taxpayers a dime, but I'm extremely skeptical to say the least. More importantly, it is outright dumb to turn elections into lotteries. People who will only vote if they think they will win some money are not the type of people we want voting. Moreover, elections are already like lotteries. People vote for candidates who they hope will pay-out in some fashion - give them "free" stuff like food, health care, education; enact their personal views into law; criminalize people they hate, etc. Instead of this stupid election lottery, why not randomly select one voter every four years and vest the person with the power to repeal any one law he or she doesn't like? That would improve voter turn-out and provide a needed check and balance.
