Russia is joining France and other collapsing welfare states in paying women to have babies. You know, to create new workers. So the state can tax them. To keep the welfare state going. Now, I don't care how people ruin their lives. Sucking dicks for crack. Having babies. It's all good. I just don't want to have to pay for their decisions. If it makes sense to have babies, people will have them. Subsidies just create distortions in the natural order of things. And those distortions will come home to roost some day.

[President Vladimir Putin's] 10-year proposal includes increasing the monthly payment for families having a second child to up to $110; providing mothers with 40 percent of their work salary for 18 months if they take time off to have a baby; bigger subsidies for child care and higher payments for those who adopt Russian babies; and a direct payment to mothers who have a second child of more than $9,000 to be used for mortgage payments, the child's education or the mother's own pension.
