National Review R.I.P.

The National Review, which has a storied history as a renegade voice, has officially become the house organ for the Bush administration. Today the magazine called for the White House to revoke the press credentials of the NY Times for their role in reporting about the government monitoring of financial transactions.

The Bush administration sticks to its story that this and other privacy violations, such as the NSA screening of phone calls and the many onerous provisions of the Patriot Act, are necessary to prevent another 9/11. Yet it is useful to note that had existing security measures been followed on 9/11 then 19 men, a few of whom had expired visas, and all of whom had bought one-way tickets in cash, would never have been allowed to board an airplane with knives in their carry-on baggage.

Arrivederci Norman Mineta.
