Anti-Chicago Libertarian Vigil

I might be the only TtP'er standing after a night of swilling at our first anniversary party, which was great fun, but I had to blog on another example of Chicago being the biggest nanny/welfare state nightmare. Now their city council, which has recently banned smoking, foie gras and trans fats,
passed a groundbreaking ordinance yesterday requiring “big box” stores, like Wal-Mart and Home Depot, to pay a minimum wage of $10 an hour by 2010, along with at least $3 an hour worth of benefits.

The ordinance, imposing the requirement on stores that occupy more than 90,000 square feet and are part of companies grossing more than $1 billion annually, would be the first in the country to single out large retailers for wage rules.
I hope that this law gets ruled unconstitutional, as did the MD anti-Wal Mart bill. I also hope that the citizens of Chicago rise up and remember what a great, free city Chicago used to be.

Note: Hat tip to Nic for alerting me to this news.
