What Washington Knows

When I first moved to the District I set up a breakfast with business people in my sector and Hill staffers in the relevant committees. I was surprised that all of the staffers that I invited came, as I thought they would be busy doing the peoples' work. Then I was astounded that they were not the public servants I had imagined, but instead were tossing their business cards around to CEOs and asking what they could do for them. That was my introduction to Washington, and then I understood it. These guys get jobs on the Hill so they can make big bucks later. There is no pretense of public service. They just want to make money.

Pious Ashcroft, who thinks that dancing is debauchery, must find a Christian way to justify his new job of using his influence to rip off taxpayers.
"It's a continuation of the aspiration I have that our nation have access to the best possible resources to fight terror, whether domestic or international," Ashcroft, founder of the Ashcroft Group LLC, said during a phone interview from his 150-acre cattle farm in rural Missouri, where he was spending a working vacation.
