Does Wealth Inequality Need to be "Fixed" by the Government?

Sebastian Mallaby, opinion writer for the Wa Post, thinks that it does, with higher taxes on high earners.

To counter Mallaby, the top 5% of earners pay more than 54% of total federal taxes. Is that not enough? The bottom 50% pay 3.5% of taxes. The average American family pays 4% of their income on federal taxes. That is a far cry from the 36% rate that top earners pay and liberals are screaming about because Bush lowered it from 39.6%.

Second, the more important question is, why does it matter? Is it the proper role of the government to redistribute wealth, to seize property from one group to give it to another? To my dismay, as I keep trying to find a reason to vote Dem, their Center for American Progress published this paper.
