GOP Symbol Recognizes Self in Mirror (Shocked to Find its 'Hidden Parts' Resemble Denny Hastert)

Grand old pachyderm news from the WaPo.
Elephants can recognize themselves in a mirror and use their reflections to explore hidden parts of themselves, a measure of subjective self-awareness that until now has been shown definitively only in humans and apes, researchers reported yesterday.
Yes, the mighty symbol of the teetertotaling party -- the elephant -- is able to recognize itself in the mirror. Which is ironic (and not in the Alanis Morissette way) these days, since much of the party itself seems not to resemble, well, itself.

What's amazing is not just that the elephant recognizes its own image, but that it's actually able to assess its own state of being. That's pretty heady stuff for a symbol that many think should be replaced by the ostrich.

One final note about the elephant:
Such animals, the thinking goes, are in a position to use what they know about themselves to make inferences about other beings and their needs.
Elephants think their personal experience should be used to attempt to discern others needs? My god how these paternalistic pachyderms sound like Democrats. Bastards! Though if the elephant were a symbol of Democrats, it's unlikely its reflection would even show up in a mirror.
