Drug War Takes Its Toll

A sad statistic reported in the WSJ is that fatal drug overdoses in the U.S. nearly doubled in the last five years. In 2004, 19,838 Americans died from drug overdoses, up from 11,155 in 1999.

So the War on Drugs is not working. In fact, by pushing drug use into the realm of the criminal, the War on Drugs is probably causing far more deaths than a legalization policy would. As someone who grew up in a Capone-like drug-dealing environment, I can say that the problem is not drugs, but drug crime. Legalize drugs, and so much inner-city crime goes away. Just like that.
