Drug Prescription Insanity

I was felled by a demon chest cold this week. As a result, I have a killer cough that keeps me up all night. Alas, I am allergic to dextromethorphan, the active ingredient in all over the counter cough medicines since codeine was pulled off of the shelves because people could get "high" on it.

As a self-employed person who pays for my own health insurance, I try to keep my health expenses minimal. I have been my doctor's patient for 11 years and have only requested codeine twice, but still I must go in and have a full (expensive) visit and physical to justify it. They treat you as criminals when only 30 years ago this stuff was available over the counter. Imagine where we will be 30 years hence.

I also was once in SF with back pain and my MD was not allowed to call in a prescription, a new federal law, so they directed me to an SF emergency room. Way to go Feds!
