Accept Higher Taxes, Or We Might Just Let Your House Burn Down If It Catches On Fire. Your Choice.

That's the way you sell tax increases at a local level. You throw out a scare budget that includes dramatic cuts to police, fire, and parks and rec facilities. Maybe write something up about how you could save a couple million by killing a few thousand homeless people.

Then say all this nastiness could be avoided if you would just be willing to pay another $500-1,500 a year in taxes.

It's all bullshit of course. A false choice. No one is cutting anything. But people always buy into the hype and allow themselves to be distracted from the real issue. Why the fuck do we need a bottle tax, a bed tax, a parking tax and an energy tax just for Baltimore to stay solvent? You think there might be some structural problems at work that won't be so easily fixed with patchwork tax increases?
