How White Is Maine?

The head of the NAACP's state prison chapter is a white dude. And convicted murderer/honorary soul brother William "Billy" Flynn doesn't sound overwhelmingly down with the cause either:
And if the question is why he is in the association at all, he explains that it seems better than the Jaycees and the Longtimers, the only other organizations the prison allows, because the NAACP chapter receives outside support. The leaders of the Portland NAACP branch and Jealous have been willing to meet with prison officials on behalf of the inmates. With "an extra-powerful support group on the street," Flynn says the prisoners can get the officials' attention. They have been able to get them to grant them lower phone rates and to issue new rules that let social groups meet more often.

The NAACP Doesn't Want An Irishman To Become Mayor of Baltimore. I'm Glad We Cleared That Up

In the annals of weird things the NAACP says and does, this ranks high up there:
Leaders of the Maryland NAACP, worried that a Baltimore mayor's criminal conviction could result in the appointment of a white or Republican leader who may not fully represent the majority black and Democratic city, are asking state lawmakers to strip the governor of authority to permanently fill the office.
OK. Fair enough. I hate white politicians too. But unlike the NAACP I haven't been kept up at night with worry of that happening anytime soon, because in this city the City Council President is a black female who also happens to be a Democrat. And even though I've never voted in a city election and spend most of my time blogging about boobies, I know that in Baltimore when there is a Mayoral vacancy, the line of succession leads straight to the City Council President. How do I know this? Because it happened 2 years ago in this fucking city.
Still, it is not clear that the resolution or a law change is warranted. According to Dan Friedman, an assistant attorney general who is counsel to the General Assembly, the governor does not have the authority to make an appointment.

Instead, the state constitution defers to the city's charter, he said, which elevates the city council president to be mayor in case of a vacancy. That's how Dixon became mayor in 2007 after Martin O'Malley, her predecessor, was elected governor.
It gets better:
Marvin L. Cheatham, the president of the Baltimore Chapter of the NAACP, introduced the resolution because he heard an attorney on a radio program discussing a lack of clarity on succession if Dixon were to be convicted and sentenced.

"Our concern is who would the governor appoint?" Cheatham said. "Here you have a predominantly African-American city. What if the governor appointed somebody white? ... Would he appoint someone Irish to be the mayor?"
Wow. Breathtakingly stupid and tone-deaf. From one "I can't believe I just said that" person to another, how the fuck do you say that out loud? I'd like to meet the guys working in the local NAACP's communication department. I betcha they have fancy degrees from places like University of Phoenix and Walden University. Christ, what a bunch of fucking idiots.

But seriously, I'm wondering --- Can they really be that stupid? First, they have the facts of succession so horribly wrong that it leads you to believe that they were blinded by scoring some cheap political points. But that doesn't even make sense. It seems like a Hey, look at us! We're still here! type of thing. But as a Baltimore Sun editorial points out, for the NAACP to be talking how a black mayor is essential to running a majority black city 9 months after we elected a black president to run a majority white country...well I don't know, it just seems really stupid. That's not to say the NAACP is incapable of doing really stupid things, just that this seems really, really fucking stupid. Even for them.

Vladimir Putin Gets Some New Homeboyz

A friend alerted me to this BBC story, which only sounds like a Dave Chappelle skit:
Russia's energy giant Gazprom has signed a $2.5bn (£1.53bn) deal with Nigeria's state operated NNPC, to invest in a new joint venture.

The new firm, to be called Nigaz, is set to build refineries, pipelines and gas power stations in Nigeria. (emphasis added.)

Analysts say the move could further strengthen Russia's role in supplying natural gas to Europe.

The agreement comes during a four-day African tour by Russian President Dmitry Medvedev.

As well as forming Nigaz, Russia is keen on developing a trans-African pipeline to transport Nigerian gas to Europe.
Read the whole BBC article here, which has a few more mentions of the company's name.

The Olive-Skinned White Man's Burden

Question: Is an Arab a caucasian or a member of a different race?

Answer: It depends on which one is better at the moment for the Arab.

The Los Angeles Times ran a fascinating piece yesterday on some of the racial politics on the UCLA campus. It was one of those articles that in its effort to be perfectly up to date with political correctness manages to unintentionally shine a light on the ironies and absurdities inherent in affirmative action and other diversity programs:
For years the federal government has classified Arab Americans and Middle Easterners as white. But confusion and disagreement have led some students to check "Asian" or "African," depending on what part of the Middle East they came from. Some ... simply marked "Other."

Now several UCLA student groups -- including Arabs, Iranians, Afghanis and Armenians -- have launched a campaign to add a Middle Eastern category, with various subgroups, to the University of California admissions application.
Okay, so this is just an ethnic pride thing, right? Err, not exactly:
The UCLA students said having their own ethnic designation goes beyond self-identity and has real implications for the larger Arab and Middle Eastern communities.

The "white" label can hurt them with universities and companies that use the information to promote diversity, they say ...
Anything to get that foot in the door, get a boost up the ladder, etc., etc ... But it's understandable, right? They are a disadvantaged minority, right? Err, not exactly:
In a 1997 report on the census, the Office of Management and Budget pointed out that while Arab Americans suffer from stereotyping, they tend to be more educated and affluent than the average American (emphasis added). The report questioned whether they should be placed in a minority category, which could increase their chances for benefits aimed at the socially and economically disadvantaged. Some in the Middle Eastern community agree.
Oh, I see. Well, they are are at least finally getting their voices heard by the government about how they would like to be classified, right? Not exactly. You see, it was the Arabs themselves who demanded to be counted as white back when that did provide automatic advantages:
Syrian immigrants, who were considered Asian, waged a legal battle in the early 1900s to be classified as white and thus eligible for citizenship. At the time some were barred by the courts under the Asian Exclusion Act.

That classification was cemented in the late 1970s when the Office of Management and Budget, a federal agency, listed all Middle Easterners as white.

But in the last few decades there has been a push to establish a separate category as the general population has grown more diverse and because of the possible benefits it could bring.
And so there you have it: They're white when it's good to be white but ethnic minorities when there are diversity programs in the offing. I can't say that I'd blame them. If I were in the same position I'd take whatever advantage I could. But can we at least acknowledge that diversity programs -- favoring one race over another in the name of justice -- are inherently absurd?

Tiger on Obama...

speaking from the Dubai Desert Classic this past weekend, (which he won of course.)[emphasis nine]
[...]Woods expressed how impressed he is with Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama.

"I've seen him speak. He's extremely articulate, very thoughtful," Woods said. "I'm just impressed at how well, basically all politicians really do, how well they think on their feet. Especially those debates. It's pretty phenomenal to see them get their point across. But I just think that he's really inspired a bunch of people in our country and we'll see what happens down the road."
See how he did that? "Articulate", "very thoughtful." He just pulled a Biden! Then he tries to cover it up -- "I'm just impressed at how well, basically all politicians really do, how well they think on their feet." Sure Tiger...We ALL know what you really meant...

Thursday Links

I know its primary season....but shouldn't we be hearing more about this?

Afghanistan tires of younger brother Iraq getting all the attention and says, "What about our country? You know the one you invaded first." Welcomes a US plan that would boost the American military contingent to 30,000 troops.

I love Tiger Woods. The world's greatest golfer, of all times, and a special kind of classy. I'd like to sit down for a burger and beers with him and his wife. Mostly his wife.

He found himself in a situation that he could have allowed to explode into another Don Imus moment. What did he do? Well, he didn't overreact and instead worked to defuse a situation that everyone knew was an unfortunate slip of the tongue when Gold Channel announcer (Kelly Tilghman) jokingly said that the world's top young golfers should, "Lynch him in a back alley". It sounds bad, I know. God, that sounds bad. But in context, it really wasn't. Sometimes people just say stupid things without any meaning behind them. She apologized directly to Tiger after the tournament coverage, and he accepted, saying publicly that the matter was closed, and that he considers Kelly a friend. Still, though I don't need to defend her choice of words, because it has nothing to with me. Right Reverend Al? Nothing to do with me....or you at all.
Before her suspension was announced, Sharpton spoke earlier on CNN's "Prime News" and continued to push for her firing, saying he wanted to meet with Golf Channel because the comments were "an insult to all blacks."
Go away, and leave us all alone. Please.

And finally, Tim Cavanaugh has the must-read piece on Ron Paul's newsletters. Read it.

NAACP Confused; Buries 'N-Word' Instead of 'Nigger'

In case you missed the news, another senseless death in urban America:
DETROIT // The NAACP held a mock funeral yesterday for one of the most inflammatory terms in the English language: the N-word

[...]

"Today, we're not just burying the N-word, we are taking it out of our spirit, we are taking it out of our minds," Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick said to thunderous applause of hundreds who gathered at the city's riverfront Hart Plaza. "To bury the N-word, we've got to bury the pimps and the hos and the hustlers. Let's bury all the nonsense that comes with this."

[..]

Leading the procession was a horse-drawn carriage carrying a simple pine casket, blanketed in wilted flowers. At the Hart Plaza amphitheater, the crowd gathered for two hours under the punishing sun, waving signs reading "Bury the N-Word" and "Gone forever."
I mean that's cool...Go ahead and have a funeral for a word, while actual funerals with real black people in caskets are happening everyday. Young black men are victims of homicides at a rate 4-5x more than their white counterparts, and I'm confident that not a single one of those victims was murdered by a word. It's silly, just plain silly.

Full article here. And yes, Mayor Kwame is that guy, who has had some problems in the past.
